Our founding partners
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is a co-founding partner of Hostage US. The Foley Foundation was established in September of 2014, one month after Jim’s brutal murder by his captors. Six months later, friends of Jim and the Foley Foundation, together with a Ford Foundation grant, fund raised to create Hostage US.
James W. Foley envisioned a world that respects the dignity and life of each person, regardless of socioeconomic status, cultural background or nationality. His life demonstrated an uncompromising commitment to the freedom of the press and to advocacy for basic human rights.
The Foley Foundation envisions a world in which “All American hostages will return home and conflict journalists who, bring truth to light, like James W. Foley, will be valued and protected”.
Our mission is to advocate for the safe return of all Americans detained abroad, to protect independent conflict journalists and to educate regarding these threats to our freedom.
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is dedicated to the vibrant legacy of James W. Foley as a committed freelance journalist and compassionate teacher/mentor. It seeks to “Inspire Moral Courage One Person at a Time”.

“We know firsthand that the families of American hostages need hope and support during the kidnapping of a loved one.
With the help of the Ford Foundation, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation funded the start of this vital resource for American hostage families. Hostage US will support and empower these families, while the JWFLF will advocate for the return of all American hostages.
We proudly welcome Rachel Briggs from Hostage UK, who brings ten years of experience to this endeavor as part of Jim’s legacy.”
-Diane Foley, mother of murdered hostage James (Jim) Foley

Hostage UK is a co-founding partner of Hostage US. Hostage UK was established in 2004 as the world’s first service supporting hostages and their families. It has established global best practice and is regularly consulted by governments, companies and non-governmental organizations around the world.
Hostage US is founded on the same principles, policies and practices of Hostage UK, adapted for the specific needs of the US. They enjoy a close relationship, working collaboratively for the benefit of hostages and their families, wherever they are.
“When I returned home after spending five years as a hostage in solitary confinement, I saw a great need for some form of organization to support families and friends of those who had been taken captive. A small group of us started Hostage UK and today, over a decade after we launched, it has become a world leader in its field.
What is needed is an impartial institution that will offer support without any strings attached and will continue with that support for as long as it is required. I am really delighted that through the hard work of many American supporters, Hostage US is now in partnership with Hostage UK. If you need advice or support, Hostage US is here for you. You do not have to go through this alone.”
