Our co-founding partners

Hostage UK

Hostage UK is a co-founding partner of Hostage US. Hostage UK was established in 2004 as the world’s first service supporting hostages and their families. It has established global best practice and is regularly consulted by governments, companies and non-governmental organizations around the world.

Hostage US is founded on the same principles, policies and practices of Hostage UK, adapted for the specific needs of the US. They enjoy a close relationship, working collaboratively for the benefit of hostages and their families, wherever they are.

See Hostage US partnership with Hostage UK video.

“When I returned home after spending five years as a hostage in solitary confinement, I saw a great need for some form of organization to support families and friends of those who had been taken captive. A small group of us started Hostage UK and today, over a decade after we launched, it has become a world leader in its field.

What is needed is an impartial institution that will offer support without any strings attached and will continue with that support for as long as it is required. I am really delighted that through the hard work of many American supporters, Hostage US is now in partnership with Hostage UK. If you need advice or support, Hostage US is here for you. You do not have to go through this alone.”

Founder and President Hostage UK

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is a co-founding partner of Hostage US. James W. Foley envisioned a world that respects the dignity and life of each person, regardless of socioeconomic status, cultural background or nationality. His life demonstrated an uncompromising commitment to the freedom of the press and to advocacy for basic human rights.

The Foundation strives to faithfully make Jim’s vision a reality through its commitment to American hostages, their families, freelance journalists and disadvantaged children.

Jim was known for his caring and joyful spirit, commitment, and bold idealism in an often cynical world. He gave a voice to those marginalized by poverty and conflict. Jim befriended them, listened to their stories and advocated for them. Jim was driven by a deep compassion for those without a voice.

Jim’s spirit has touched millions of people. The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is committed to seeing his living legacy inspire millions more to promote freedom and justice in our world.

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is dedicated to the vibrant legacy of James W. Foley as a committed freelance journalist and compassionate teacher/mentor.

We seek to:

  • Advocate for the release of American hostages,
  • Foster a culture of safety for freelance conflict journalists,
  • Open young minds to possibilities.

We hope to inspire others to continue his work of giving voice to those who have none.

See Hostage US partnership with JWFLF video.

“We know firsthand that the families of American hostages need hope and support during the kidnapping of a loved one.

With the help of the Ford Foundation, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation funded the start of this vital resource for American hostage families. Hostage US will support and empower these families, while the JWFLF will advocate for the return of all American hostages.

We proudly welcome Rachel Briggs from Hostage UK, who brings ten years of experience to this endeavor as part of Jim’s legacy.”

-Diane Foley, mother of murdered hostage James (Jim) Foley
